Ludus

Scaffolded and Engaging Math Manipulative Design

Ludus was a framework for designing playful mathematical machines that aims to teach primary school children strategies for using strategies to perform mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The machines also adapt to the student’s current competency level in a strategy, and moves the learners systematically from introduction, through familiarisation, to proficiency.

Responsibilities

  1. Designed the scaffolded flow of learning for math strategies like adding 3 digit numbers, adding by making a ten, etc. Derived a generic method of manipulative design from these explorations.

  2. Created the concept art of the machine, which included the visual design and the UI flows
